Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The Skidmore College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with SUNY New Paltz in a tightly contested game Saturday at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds move to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Hawks go to 0-3-2.
The Hawks opened the scoring in the 37th minute on a close-range strike from Joe Hughes. Brian Spina sent in a free kick from 35 yards that dropped to Hughes, whose shot deflected off a Skidmore defender and over the goalkeeper.
Alex Hodor-Lee brought the Thoroughbreds level in the 55th minute with his first goal of the season, curling a corner kick in off the far post.
New Paltz mounted one final attack in regulation, as Javier Ventas fired a low strike from 25 yards out, but Skidmore's sophomore goalkeeper
Danny Ebenstein made a diving save to his right to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime.
The Thoroughbreds generated the best chance in overtime, but
Brock Bakewell was denied by Hawks goalkeeper Andres Montoya on a breakaway. Â Bakewell broke free after Hodor-Lee beat his defender to the ball and made a sliding pass behind the New Paltz back line.
Skidmore was outshot 16-11, but held a 2-0 advantage in corners. Ebenstein made six saves in his first appearance of the season, while Montoya registered five saves in goal for the Hawks.
The Thoroughbreds open conference play Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. as they host Liberty League rival RPI.
