Softball blanked by Union

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Skidmore College softball team dropped its first Liberty League games of the season, Saturday afternoon to host Union College.  The Thoroughbreds lost the first game 5-1 before dropping the second 13-0 on the strength of Allyson Staats five no-hit innings.

In the first game, Skidmore (8-15, 0-2 Liberty League) fell behind in the first inning after an RBI double by Staats plated Alyssa Wolejko.  The next batter, Samantha Chevalier lifted a long homerun scoring Staats in the process to give Union (5-12, 2-0 Liberty League) a 3-0 advantage.

The Dutchwomen plated two more runs in the home half of the third inning to push their lead to 5-0.

Skidmore scored its only run of the game in the fifth as Cassie Fishkin led off with a double and advanced to third on a Mackenzie Whiting groundout.  Katie Peverada earned an RBI, plating Fishkin with a sacrifice fly to the Union left fielder, making it 5-1.

Wolejko pitched seven strong innings for Union to earn her second victory of the season.  She allowed four hits, one unearned run and retired 10 Thoroughbred batters by way of the strikeout.

Katie Sorochka takes the loss for Skidmore after giving up nine hits, five earned runs while striking out six in six innings.
Fishkin, the League's reigning Rookie of the Week was 2-3 from the plate with a double and a run scored.  Carol Brown and Christine Munisteri were each 1-3.

Wolejko was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Staats clubbed two hits in three at-bats with a run scored and an RBI.  Chevalier was 1-1 with a homerun, two RBI and a walk.

The Dutchwomen were running on all cylinders in the second game blanking the Thoroughbreds 13-0 while Staats' kept the Thoroughbred offense at bay.

Staats retired 13 batters in a row until a Union error in the fifth allowed Julia Schwartz to reach first base, but that was as far as she would get.  Staats induced the next two Thoroughbred batters to groundout, sealing the win for Union.

Fishkin was the losing pitcher after surrendering five runs on four hits. Staats recorded her first win of the season in a big way.

Skidmore is back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader against RPI in Troy, N.Y.
