Softball drops pair on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College softball saw its senior day spoiled as St. Lawrence took both ends of a doubleheader, Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park.  Skidmore now sits at 1-9 in league play and 9-25 overall, while St. Lawrence improves to 6-4 in the standings and 14-11 overall.

Leslie Stratton led off the first game with a deep shot that rolled all the way to the fence, allowing her to cruise into third base.  Stratton would score the game's first run on a wild pitch, but Skidmore's Katie Sorochka recovered nicely and retired the side without allowing another batter to reach.

St. Lawrence pitcher Kyle Plimpton came out firing as she struck out five Thoroughbreds over the first two innings before Skidmore was able to put a runner on board as Katie Peverada worked a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Two more strikeouts stranded Peverada at second base as the Saints ended the threat, preserving their 1-0 lead.

The Thoroughbreds would get one back in the home half of the fourth after Donata Lorenzo and Julia Schwartz led off with back-to-back-singles.  Lorenzo tagged up from third base after Mackenzie Whiting fouled out to deep right and slid across home plate to make it 2-1.

The Thoroughbred bats came to life in the fifth inning as seniors Carol Brown and Julia Schwartz singled in a pair of runs each to give Skidmore the lead, 5-2.

The lead wouldn't hold for long, however, as St. Lawrence smashed four hits en route to four more runs, making it 6-5 in favor of the visitors.  Two more late runs sealed the win 8-5 win for the Saints.

Sorochka moves to 8-13 on the year after tossing the complete game and allowing eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits.  The junior pitched struck out eight batters.  Plimpton moves to 7-6 on the season as she scattered five hits, while striking out 15 Thoroughbreds.

Schwartz had a strong game, going 3-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base.  Peverada was 2-2 with a walk and a run scored, while Lorenzo tallied one hit in three at-bats and scored one run.

In the second game, St. Lawrence threatened early, as the first three batters reached to load the bases with Saints.  McGinley pushed the first run across, drawing a bases loaded walk before a fielder's choice made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

St. Lawrence loaded the bases again in the second inning, this time producing three more runs to extend its lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Mackenzie Whiting launched a single that hit off the base of the outfield fencing, but that was as far as she would get as McGinley, game two's pitcher struck out the side to preserve the lead.

The visitors loaded the bases again in the top of the fourth, this time scoring a pair of runs as Skidmore walked Welsh was hit by a pitch to force in a run and the next batter, Lauren Weisbarth knocked in St. Lawrence's eighth run as she lined one up the middle.
