Softball swept by Rochester

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College softball team overcame a five-run deficit in the sixth inning of the second leg of a doubleheader against Liberty League foe, University of Rochester, before a costly error in the seventh plated a Yellow Jacket run en route to a 6-5 win.

In the opening game, Rochester scored runs in the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead before Skidmore got on the board in the home half of the third inning when Carol Brown singled home Katie Peverada who had led off with a single and quickly stole second base.

Two more Yellow Jacket runs in the fifth and six innings pushed the score to 6-1.  Skidmore scored a late run in the seventh when Lila Rosenfeld crossed home plate after a Brown single, but Rochester would escape the inning to earn the win.

Brittany Grage moves to 5-8 on the season after allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings.  Katie Sorochka takes the loss, moving to 7-12 overall after tossing seven innings and giving up six runs (three earned) on six hits.

Brown was 2-3 with a pair of RBI, while Mackenzie Whiting, Abby Shea and Peverada were each 1-3 respectively.

Rochester got off to a strong start in the second game, plating three runs in the second inning on the strength of a Lauren Muni homerun that cleared the center field fence.  Rochester added another run in the third inning when Muni came to bat with the bases loaded and drew a walk to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-0.

Skidmore answered in the home half of the third, scoring three runs of its own.  Sam Skott led off the inning with a double and was moved to third on a Shea sacrifice.  Carol Brown blooped one to right field that got away from the fielder, allowing Skott to score and Brown to replace her at third base.  The next batter, Katie Amo, singled up the middle, plating Brown in the process.  Julia Schwartz stepped into the box and proceeded to blast a double to the fence that scored Amo.  Two consecutive Thoroughbred strikeouts allowed Rochester to get out of the inning before Skidmore could do any more damage.

The Thoroughbreds retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings and came into the bottom of the fifth looking to make a move.  Schwartz helped her own cause launching a massive homer to center field to bring Skidmore within one at 5-4.
Skidmore tied the game in the sixth when Brown singled in Skidmore's sixth run, but that was all the home team would get as Rochester went on to escape a bases loaded jam to preserve the tie.

With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Nina Korn lifted a double and would score the go-ahead run when Skidmore committed a costly error that allowed Rochester to take the lead.

Down 6-5 with only three outs remaining, Rochester hunkered down on defense and retired the side in order to record the win.

Schwartz, now 0-4 takes the loss for Skidmore after six runs (four earned) in six and a third innings pitched.  Sarah Wayson (1-5) gets the win in relief of Madeline Skellie who tossed five and two thirds innings and allowed five runs.

Schwartz was 2-3 with a homerun, a double, one RBI, a walk and one run scored.  Brown had another fine day at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while Skott was 2-3 with a double and a run scored.

Tayler Fravel was 2-4 in the game with a run scored, while Meghan Hennessy was 2-3 with a walk.

Skidmore (8-22, 0-6 Liberty League) will host a conference doubleheader with RIT Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at Wagner Park.
