Women's lacrosse falls to Vassar

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College woman's lacrosse team dropped a Liberty league matchup with Vassar College 19-9 Friday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.  The Thoroughbreds are now 0-4 in conference play and 1-9 overall, while Vassar moves to 3-2 in the League standings with an 8-2 overall mark.

Vassar had its offense working early as it jumped out to a three goal lead in a matter of three minutes.  The Thoroughbreds battled back, scoring two marks of their own to cut the Brewer advantage to a single goal.

Robin Fetterolf got the afternoon started for Skidmore, netting her 15th goal of the season on a shot from the circle that fooled Vassar Goalie Katharine Pula at the 23:01 mark of the first half.  Skidmore tallied its second goal when Anna Gubbins found nylon to make it 3-2.

Two more Vassar goals put the visitors up three at 13:31, but Skidmore bounced back, narrowing the Brewer lead to 5-4 on the strength of goals from Spencer Morgan and Maggie Murphy.

With the momentum swinging in the Thoroughbred's favor, the Brewers unloaded five unanswered goals to stretch the lead to 10-4.

Emma Harris scored a late goal for the Thoroughbreds at 1:13 of the first stanza, but the Brewers countered 12 seconds later to take an 11-5 lead into halftime.

Down 12-5 in the second half, the Thoroughbreds looked to make a move when Caroline Bowne found an open Lexi Melville who buried the shot to bring the count to 12-6.  Ninety seconds later, Skidmore was at it again when Murphy snagged a Robin Fetterolf pass and found the back of the cage to cap the modest 2-0 run.

Both teams exchanged goals over the next eight plus minutes until a Morgan shot from the circle made it 14-9 in Vassar's favor.  That was as close as Skidmore would come in the second half, as Vassar poured in five more goals to end the game holding a 19-9 lead.

Vassar outshot the Thoroughbreds on the offensive end 28-15, while Vassar enjoyed a 7-3 advantage in free position opportunities.

Shelby Witheford, now 1-9 on the season, takes the loss after coming up with nine saves.  Pula improves to 5-1 this year after making six stops in net.

Morgan had a team-high three points on two goals and one assist, while collecting three groundballs and four draw controls.  Murphy recorded one goal while Bowne and Fetterolf each scored one goal and contributed one assist respectively.  Gubbins, Melville and Harris each netted one goal for Coach Ghilardi's squad.

Vassar was paced by Dara Davis who poured in five goals.  Phoebe Tzannes had four goals and one assist in the win.

The Thoroughbreds will host Bard College Saturday at 2 p.m. in a Liberty League contest.
