Softball swept by Middlebury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Five combined hits were all that Middlebury's pitchers allowed, as the Skidmore College softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader, Wednesday afternoon.  The Thoroughbreds fell 9-0 in the first game before dropping the second 8-0 in five innings.

Skidmore moves to 8-20 on the season, while Middlebury improves to 13-6.

In the opening game, Middlebury was poised to have a big first inning as the Panthers loaded the bases and produced two quick runs.  The Thoroughbreds were able to hold the Panthers at two when a Katie Amo throw from left field landed in Skidmore catcher Carol Brown's glove as she applied the tag at home to escape the inning down 2-0.

Middlebury scored another run in the third inning before exploding for four runs in the home half of the fifth on the strength of four hits.  The big blow came off the bat of Emily Kratenberg who lined a triple into right field that plated three Panthers.
Middlebury sealed the victory in the sixth when Jessica Poracky launched a two-run home run over the scoreboard in center field to give the home team the 9-0 edge.

Carol Brown was 1-3 in the game.  Mackenzie Whiting and Abby Shea each singled in two plate appearances, while Julia Schwartz was 1-2 with a double.

Schwartz takes the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks in four innings.

In the second game, Middlebury stymied the Skidmore offense, holding the Thoroughbreds to one hit, a double by Cassie Fishkin in the second inning.

The Panthers scored a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back; scoring three more runs in the third and two in the fourth before closing out the game 8-0 in the fifth inning after Sarah Boylan singled home Carlyn Vachow who had lead off the inning with a triple.

With the loss, Katie Sorochka moves to 7-11 on the season after giving up five runs in three innings.

The Thoroughbreds return to Wagner Park, Saturday at 1 p.m. for a conference doubleheader against the University of Rochester.
