Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UTICA, N.Y. - The Skidmore softball team dropped the front of end of a doubleheader Friday against the Utica College Pioneers 10-3, before losing the nightcap 12-5.

Skidmore is now 6-12 overall on the season, while Utica improves to 10-5.

In the opening game, Utica got on the board first, after a bases clearing double by Alysa Russell plated three pioneers.  The next batter, Dominique Carcone singled up the middle to plate Russell and give Utica a 4-0 lead.  The Pioneers scored their fifth run of the inning after Cassie Smith's base hit knocked in Carcone making it 5-0 in favor of the home team.

Skidmore countered in the top of the fourth as Cassie Fishkin reached base on a Utica error and advanced to second on the play.  Lila Rosenfeld doubled to deep leftfield scoring Fishkin to make it 5-1.  Skidmore again capitalized on a Utica error when Abby Shea reached allowing Rosenfeld to race home for another Thoroughbred run; their second.

Skidmore tried to keep it close in the fifth when Katie Sorochka launched a homerun, her first of the season, bringing the Thoroughbreds within four runs, but three more Utica runs would put the game out of reach as the Pioneers prevailed 10-3.

Sorochka takes the loss for Skidmore after hurling six innings and allowing 10 runs on 10 hits.  Erica Colucci earns the complete-game victory, allowing three runs while striking out 11.

Skidmore got off to a strong start in the early innings of the nightcap.

In the first inning, Brown worked a walk and moved to third, when one of Utica's infielders couldn't field a Rosenfeld bunt cleanly, allowing her to reach on the error.  A passed ball allowed Brown to cross home plate for Skidmore's first lead of the afternoon.  Rosenfeld later scored when Mackenzie Whiting reached on a fielder's choice, making it 2-0 in favor of the visiting Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore was at it again in the top of the second when Brown singled home Katie Amo for a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers got one back in the fourth inning when a Skidmore error allowed Carcone to score on the play, making it 3-1.

Utica exploded in the fifth inning, scoring nine runs to take a 10-3 lead.  The big blow came off the bat of Chelsea Monroe who swatted a grand slam.

Skidmore would score two more unearned runs in the sixth to cut the Pioneer lead to 10-5, but a Russell homer in the home half of the sixth sealed the victory for Utica.

Brionna Enny gets the win for the Pioneers, allowing two earned runs on six hits.  Fishkin takes the loss for Skidmore after giving up 10 runs (seven earned) in five innings.
