Clarkson holds off Skidmore for 61-55 win

Box Score Potsdam, N.Y. - The Skidmore women's basketball team (12-11, 10-4 Liberty League) nearly erased a 13 point halftime deficit against Clarkson (4-18, 2-12) Tuesday night, but came up short, as the home team prevailed 61-55.  The loss drops Skidmore to third place in the latest Liberty League standings.

The first half belonged to Clarkson as Skidmore struggled to contain the Golden Knights balanced scoring attack.  Clarkson found its rhythm early, outscoring Skidmore 14-2 in the game's first six and a half minutes.  The Golden Knights shot nearly 87 percent from the floor in the opening minutes of action, making 12 of 13 shots.

Despite Clarkson shooting over 68 percent from the field in the first half of action, Skidmore headed into the locker room trailing 35-22.

The Thoroughbreds stepped up their defensive intensity as the second half got underway, coming up with four steals in the first four minutes of play.  Molly McLaughlin (So., Westwood, Mass.) drained a quick three-pointer, which sparked a Skidmore run.  The Thoroughbreds went to work inside, scoring eight points on layups to stretch the scoring run to 10 unanswered points thus minimizing the gap to two with nearly 16 minutes left to play.  Clarkson's Ashley Loggins would end the Golden Knights' scoring drought by connecting on back-to-back three-pointers to give the home team an eight point margin.  Skidmore would cut the deficit to two, but that was as close it would come as late free-throws sealed the victory for Clarkson.

Angela Botiba (So., Douala, Cameroon) had a team-high 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting while collecting five rebounds and two steals.  Logan Frederick (Sr., Arlington, Va.) chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds, while McLaughlin added eight points of her own.

Clarkson was paced by Loggins who had a game-high 20 points.  Isabella Esposito contributed 17 in the win.

The Thoroughbreds are back in action this weekend as they host Vassar College Friday night at 6 p.m. before traveling to RPI on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
