Skidmore knocks off Middlebury, 63-50

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Amber Holgate scored a career-high 15 points off the bench to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball team past Middlebury College, 63-50, Saturday afternoon at the Williamson Sports Center.

Jordyn Wartts recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while adding four steals, Angela Botiba had 11 points and seven rebounds and Molly McLaughlin had seven points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Lauray Lowry led the Panthers with 12 points and six rebounds and Alexis Coolidge and Sarah Marcus each scored 11 points.

Middlebury jumped out to a four-point lead in the opening minutes of the contest, but Lindsey Davis knocked down a three-pointer to bring Skidmore back within one.  The Panthers clung to the lead for the majority of the first half, going up five (17-12) with four minutes remaining on a layup from Marcus.

The Thoroughbreds responded with an 11-0 run to end the first half with Holgate scoring eight-straight points, hitting a jumper followed by back-to-back threes to give Skidmore a 26-17 lead.

The Thoroughbreds continued to dominate defensively to start the second half, allowing only five points over the first seven minutes. The Panthers cut the deficit to three at 37-34, opening up a 14-5 run midway through the second capped by a Lowry three-pointer.

Skidmore bounced back with a run of its own, scoring seven-straight points to take a 44-34 lead. Lowry hit another three with 8:40 to play to put Middlebury within seven, but Ella Scheuerell and Davis put the game out of reach with back-to-back threes, giving Skidmore a 53-37 lead. The Thoroughbreds hit their shots down the stretch to hold on for the 63-50 win.

"Our defense stood up for 40 minutes and gave a great effort in holding a very good team to 50 points on the game, allowing just 17 in the first half," said Skidmore head coach Darren Bennett. "Our guard on ball play was very solid today with Jordyn [Wartts] leading the way and really pressuring their point guard and disrupting their offensive flow.

"Amber Holgate had a huge first half for us spurring our run going into half time.  She scores great in practice yet has not been able to bring it on game day and today she brought it on game day.  It was good to see and it's something we are going to have to see from her again and other players if we are going to continue pushing forward.
"Molly [McLaughlin] really had a great game for today.  She continues to become more and more willing and confident to shoot the ball which is going to open up the rest of her game allowing her to be the complete player that she can be.  She continues to see the floor well, is taking great care of the ball.  Although her shot is not falling right now, when she finds it is really going to help out the entire team."

Skidmore (2-4) travels to the Albany College of Pharmacy Tuesday, Dec. 10 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
