Botiba picks up double-double as Skidmore falls against #5 Amherst

Box Score AMHERST, MA -- Angela Botiba registered her second-straight double-double, as the Skidmore College women's basketball team dropped a tightly contested matchup against the fifth-ranked Amherst College Jeffs, 63-52, Tuesday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

With the win, the Jeffs (2-0) extended their home winning streak to 88 games.

Botiba led the Thoroughbreds with 19 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 4-4 from the floor in the first half. Jordyn Wartts finished with 14 points and four rebounds and Molly McLaughlin added 10 points and four rebounds.

Megan Robertson contributed 25 points and nine rebounds for the Jeffs and Marley Giddins recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the opening minutes with Skidmore getting on the board first at the 18:20 mark when McLaughlin completed a three-point play.

Skidmore then grabbed its largest lead of the game with just over 12 minutes to play when Amber Holgate '16 recorded a lay-up to put them up 11-4.

Down by four with just over two minutes to play before halftime, Haley Zwecker hit a big three to change the game's momentum. The next time the Jeffs touched the ball, Giddins hit a jumper just outside the paint as Amherst grabbed its first lead of the game, up 23-22 at the 1:36 mark.

A minute later, Zwecker cut to the lane and dished it off to Giddins for an easy lay-up as the Jeffs entered the break with a 25-24 lead.

Amherst carried the momentum into the second half opening up a seven point lead, but Holgate displayed some nifty moves, cutting to the hoop and converting on a layup to bring the Thoroughbreds back within three at 36-33.

Following some back-and-forth action down the stretch, Robertson hit a jumper just inside the three-point line as the Jeffs claimed a nine point lead at the 5:24 mark. Seconds later, Cheyenne Pritchard connected on another deep one from behind-the-arc to put Amherst up by 12.

Despite heavy pressure from the Thoroughbred defense, Amherst maintained a double-digit lead the remainder of the game as they pulled away, 63-52.

"Our team battled and never gave up. We worked extremely hard on the defense end of the floor forcing their guards into tough shots and making them a one dimensional team," said Skidmore Coach Darren Bennett. "In the end they really had tremendous success with their inside game and really worked the hi-low well and pounded the ball inside to [Robertson] and she finished with tremendous results."

"We got better tonight and we progressed.  I'm extremely proud of our team playing a top-10 nationally ranked team on the road and never giving up. We will continue to get better and all results will take care of them self."

Skidmore travels to Hamilton College Monday, Nov. 25 for a 6 p.m. contest.
