Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The Skidmore College women's basketball team held the lead the entire first half but came up just short, falling 66-56 against Oneonta St., Saturday in the final day of the 2013 Skidmore Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament.
In the first game of the day, Hamilton College defeated Western New England University 53-44.
The Thoroughbreds move to 0-2, while the Red Dragons improve to 2-0.
Skidmore's
Angela Botiba, an All-Tournament selection, led all scorers, recording a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds,
Jordyn Wartts had 11 points and
Migle Vilunaite had seven points and 14 rebounds.
Grace Schilling was Oneonta's top scorer with 16 points, adding six rebounds, Alyshia Crawford scored 13 points, Skidmore Invitational Tournament MVP Sarah Longto contributed 12 points four rebounds and four blocks and Lyteshia Price registered 10 points and eight rebounds.
Skidmore opened the game with a 10-3 run, capped by a Jodyn Wartts three-pointer. Oneonta St. came back within four with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, but the Thoroughbreds pushed back ahead, opening a 12-point lead with a three-pointer from
Molly McLaughlin.
The Red Dragons ended the first half on an 8-3 run, and Schilling's layup with three seconds to play cut Skidmore's lead to three at 32-29.
Oneonta St. started strong in the second half, taking a seven-point lead at 41-34. Botiba hit a pair of free-throws to put the Thoroughbreds within five with 13 minutes to play, but that is as close as they would get as the Red Dragons managed to hang on for the 66-56 win.
Skidmore travels to Amherst College Thursday, Nov. 21 for a 7 p.m. contest.
Hamilton downs Western New England, 53-44
The Hamilton College women's basketball team outlasted Western New England University, securing a 53-44 win in the second day of the 37
th Skidmore Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament.
Samantha Graber, who recorded 15 points and seven rebounds, led the Continentals offense. Serena Ward, Dani Feigin and Carly Gruenberg all added eight points.
Chelsea Vujs scored fourteen points and Ashley Flood added eight points and seven rebounds for the Golden Bears.
The Theresa Salud converted with a layup on a fast break to give Hamilton an early 10-4 lead. Western New England battled back with an 8-0 run capped by a Flood layup.
The Continentals increased the lead to six three minutes into the second, but again the Golden Bears fought back with a 9-2 run, taking a 28-27 lead off a Vujs layup.
Hamilton regained the lead at 30-28 with a three-pointer from Samantha Graber starting a run of 26-straight points for the Continentals over a nine-minute span. Western New England chipped away at the lead, but Hamilton held on for the 53-44 win.
