Skidmore drops two to RPI

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Liberty League softball leader Rensselaer completed a 4-0 league weekend with a 9-1, 6-4 sweep of Skidmore College, Sunday afternoon.
 
The Thoroughbreds are 12-14 and 1-3 in league play, while the Engineers improve to 14-8 and 4-0.
 
The first game was a scoreless pitchers duel for the first four innings. Skidmore's Sam Crose allowed only one hit through four, facing the minimum batters, while RPI's Kristina Weltzin worked herself out of trouble in three innings, allowing only three hits, but walking five. 
 
The Engineers broke it open in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on three hits, two errors and three walks.  Dani Grage had a two-run double and Kelly Erkert drilled a 3-2 pitch down the left field line for a two-run triple.  
 
Skidmore scored once in the sixth when Carol Brown doubled to plate Abby Shea.
 
RPI added its final three runs in the seventh, keyed by Charlene Osmanski's two-run single.
 
Brown, Julie Schwartz, and Katie Sorochka had two hits each for the Thoroughbreds. Crose took the loss, she allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks in five innings.  Skidmore stranded 10 batters.
 
Erkert finished with two hits for the Engineers. Weltzin got the win, allowing one run on six hits, with six walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work.
 
In the second game, Skidmore took a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Schwartz gave the Thoroughbreds a 2-0 lead with her first home run of the season in the fourth.  Christina Gargiso had a two-run single in the fifth, chasing RPI starter Charlene Osmanski.
 
The Engineers answered with six runs in the sixth on three hits, two walks, and a pair of hit batters. Tori Hunt's bases loaded triple to right field was the key play in the inning.
 
Gargiso was 3-4 with two RBI for the Thoroughbreds.  Sam Crose allowed five runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
 
Jocilyn Rudisill was 3-4 for RPI.  Weltzin her second win of the afternoon, this time in relief. She threw  2.1 scoreless innings, with one hit and five strikeouts.
 
Skidmore hosts Middlebury College on April 10 at 3:30 p.m.  RPI travels to Oneonta on April 10.
