Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- St. Lawrence University jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on the way to a 12-7 Liberty League women's lacrosse win over Skidmore College, Friday at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Saints are 4-3 and 1-0.
Four different SLU players scored in a 2:08 span in the first half to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. Skidmore got within two, 4-2 on goals by
Laura Ferzoco at 22:24 and
Lexi Melville at 12:31. The Saints responded with another pair of quick goals at 9:53 by Brigid Hurley and 8:51 by Carly VanTassel to get the lead back to four, 6-2.
The Thoroughbreds fought back to within two again when
Leslie Stebbins scored back-to-back goals at 8:19 and 7:07 to make it 6-4. But once again SLU answered, this time scoring three of the final four goals of the half, to take a 9-5 lead at the break.
Melville opened the scoring in the second half at 28:53 to keep it close, 9-6. The Saints then put together another three goal run, keyed by goals by Kendall Harty at 28:38 and 26:30. Stebbins scored her 18th of the season at 11:06 for the 12-7 final.
Stebbins finished with three goals and four draw controls. Melville had two goals and an assist and
Lauren Madden had a goal and
Robin Fetterolf and
Sam McMorris each had an assist for the Thoroughbreds. Fetterolf also had four draw controls. Defender
Ali Evans had four ground balls and a draw.
Harty finished with three goals and an assist, while Hurley and Hanne Baily had three goals each for the Saints. Holly Noyes had four draw controls.
Skidmore had a 36-24 shot and 24-15 ground ball advantage.
Rachel Klein had eight saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds, while Paige Powell had 16 saves, including 10 in the second half for the Saints.
Skidmore will host Clarkson on Saturday at 2 p.m., while St. Lawrence travels to RPI for a 2 p.m. game.
