Skidmore drops two at Rochester

Game 1

Game 2

Rochester, N.Y.--The University of Rochester squeezed out two first inning runs off Skidmore's Sam Crose in game two to sweep a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Rochester won game two, 2-0, after winning game one, 15-3.

Crose scattered four hits, walked two, and struck out five. One of the two runs she conceded was unearned. She is 9-7. The win went to Rochester's Brittany Grage. She allowed five hits, walked one, and fanned seven. Grage is 6-4.

Julia Schwartz was 1-3 with two RBIs in game one for the Thoroughbreds (13-17, 2-6 Liberty League). She lined a two-run single off Ashley Amidon in the top of the fifth. The first Skidmore run was driven in by Carol Brown who drew a bases-loaded walk in the second.

Katie Sorochka took the game one loss. Rochester collected seven hits – two of them home runs by Natalee Sassaman – and nine runs in 1.2 innings. The Yellowjackets scored six in the first, three in the second, and six more in the third. Sassaman finished with four RBIs and Gena Bradford Tume had five RBIs.

In the nitecap, Rochester scored twice in the first off Crose. Meg Hennessy doubled, moved to third on a bunt, and eventually scored when a pickoff throw sailed into left field. Nina Korn, who had walked, moved to second on the errant throw. She scored on Bradford Tume's ground rule double to left center.

Crose retired seven straight at one point. In the fourth, she hit Korn, struck out Bradford Tume, gave up a single to Sassaman, struck out Grage, and walked Sam Melvin to load the bases. She retired Sara Hutchinson on an infield pop to get out of it. Hennessy reached third with two down in the fifth before Korn grounded out.

In the Skidmore third, Julia Martine singled. Molly Canavan struck out. Martin reached second on a wild pitch and took third on Brown's single up the middle. Brown reached second on the throw to keep Martin at third. Abby Shea bounced to short. Hennessy threw home where Melvin tagged out Martin. Christina Gargiso lined out to end it.

Schwartz singled, was bunted to second by Sorochka in the fourth, and took third on Donata Lorenzo's grounder. Kate Peverada grounded out to end the inning.

Gargiso reached third with two down in the sixth before Sarochka bounced out. In the seventh, Loreznzo singled and was forced at second. Lauren Bernstein ran for Peverada. Martin lined to Hutchinson at second and she managed to double off Bernstein at first to end the game.
