Herons rally past Thoroughbreds, 13-9

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-9 loss to William Smith in Friday afternoon's Liberty League matchup at Wachenheim Field.
 
The Thoroughbreds fall to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Herons improve to 5-5 overall and 4-0 league.
 
William Smith got out to a 3-0 lead in the first 4:51 behind goals from Lucy Johnson, Kathleen Ragan and Kathryn Gillan, but Skidmore responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead with 10:19 left in the half.  Robin Fetterolf scored a pair and assisted on another during the run.  Gillan cut the lead down to one, but back-to-back goals from Peggy Healy and Summer Segalas to close out the half gave the Thoroughbreds a 7-4 lead at the break.
 
The Herons opened the second half just like the first, running off four unanswered goals to take the lead on Johnson's second goal at 24:27.  The teams traded goals as Brittney Dioneda found Spencer Morgan to tie it up at 8-8 before Ragan and Lexi Melville each scored to tie it back up at 9-9.  The Thoroughbreds were unable to regain the lead as William Smith scored the game's final four goals to earn the 13-9 win.
 
Fetterolf and Segalas finished with two goals and an assist each, while Melville had two goals and Ali Evans had a game-high four ground balls and team-high three draw controls for Skidmore.  Rachel Klein took the loss in goal, finishing with four saves.
 
For the Herons, Johnson, Ragan and Gillan each tallied hat tricks, while Johnson added three ground balls and a game-high five draw controls.  Maggie McNair finished with eight saves on 17 shots faced to earn the win.
 
William Smith held a 23-22 advantage in shots as both teams finished with 21 ground balls and 12 draw controls.
 
The Thoroughbreds host Union tomorrow, while the Herons travel to RPI.  Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m. starts.
