Rochester, N.Y. - The Skidmore College softball team split its Liberty League doubleheader with RIT, Friday afternoon at RIT Field. The Thoroughbreds won game one, 9-3, while the Tigers rallied from a 7-5 deficit to win game two, 8-7.
Skidmore moves to 13-15 overall and 2-4 in league play, while RIT is 8-16 and 1-3.
After falling behind 1-0 in the opener, the Thoroughbreds broke through for four runs in the third behind a two RBI single from
Carol Brown sandwiched between RBI singles from
Katie Amo and
Christina Gargiso. Skidmore made it a 6-1 game on a
Katie Peverada two RBI double in the fourth.
RIT added a run in the bottom half of the fourth, but Skidmore added insurance runs in the seventh behind a two RBI double from
Katie Sorochka and a
Donata Lorenzo sacrifice fly. The Tigers plated one more in the seventh, but Thoroughbreds closed the door for the 9-3 win.
Sam Crose earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits in the complete game effort. Sorochka finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and Peverada was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. All nine batters for Skidmore scored in the win.
In the nightcap, RIT got out to a 4-0 lead highlighted by a three-run homerun from Brittany Griffin. The teams traded runs in the fifth on RBI singles from
Christina Gargiso and Arielle Link.
The Thoroughbreds erased the deficit in the sixth with a six-run outburst.
Julia Martin started the scoring with a run-scoring and Brown plated another run on a base hit before Gargiso came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a triple.
Julia Schwartz capped the scoring with an RBI double to make it a 7-5 game.
The Tigers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning as Brittney Lavoie plated a run on a groundout and Brittany Purcell gave RIT an 8-7 lead with a two run double. Skidmore was unable to come back as Tiffany Gundler retired the side to earn the win for RIT.
Brown, Gargiso, Schwartz and
Abby Shea all finished with two hits apiece for the Thoroughbreds.
Abby Fuhrman took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings of relief.
Skidmore resumes play league play tomorrow with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Univ. of Rochester.
