Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team dropped a pair of games to Utica in Sunday's non-league doubleheader at Thoroughbred Field. The Pioneers earned a 3-2 win in game one before picking up a 10-3 win in a rain-soaked game two.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 10-10, while Utica improves to 13-4.
In the opener, the pitchers were in control throughout most of the game as neither team was able to score until the fifth.
Bridgette Plummer put the Pioneers up 1-0, plating Haley Butler on an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth. Utica added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run home run from Mallory Ingalls to make it 3-0.
After an error and an infield single in the bottom half of the sixth, freshman
Donata Lorenzo cut the lead to 3-2 on a two-out, two-RBI single for Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds had the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Cassidy Thompson was able to get out of it and pick up her fourth save of the season.
Sam Crose took the loss for Skidmore, allowing three runs on eight hits in the complete game effort. Heather Kingsbury earned the win, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits in six innings.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers struck first, plating a run in the first on an RBI single from Courtney Fitzgerald. They added five more in the fourth highlighted by an RBI single from Jess Anson and a two-RBI single from Meghan Matan.
The Thoroughbreds got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from
Julia Schwartz, but Utica answered right back with two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 8-1.
Schwartz just missed a home run in the sixth, hitting a double off the top of the fence to plate
Christina Gargiso. The Pioneers added two more in the seventh, pushing their lead to 10-2. Freshman
Katie Amo added an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Utica picked up the 10-3 win and the sweep.
Abby Fuhrman took the loss for Skidmore, while Briona Enny earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out 10 in the complete game victory.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on Wednesday, when they host Sage for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
