Thoroughbreds hold off RPI, 59-50

Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball kept their playoff hopes alive with Friday night's 59-50 win over RPI at the Williamson Sports Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds improve to 15-9 overall and 8-7 in league play, while the Engineers fall to 15-9 overall and 9-6 league.  The Thoroughbreds currently sit in fifth, behind a three-way tie for second between RPI, William Smith and Vassar.
 
Christina Gargiso led Skidmore with 12 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Jessie Kavana added 11 and Megan Gaugler finished with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.  Angela Botiba pulled down 11 rebounds to go with eight points.
 
Sarah Wetmore had a game-high 18 points for the Engineers as she surpassed the 1,000 career point mark with her first basket.  Hillary McKinley scored nine points, while grabbing 13 rebounds and recording three blocks.
 
The Thoroughbreds opened the game with a 9-0 run and controlled most of the first half, leading by as many as 13 after a Gargiso layup at 13:16.  RPI got back in it and cut the lead to two on a Jen Rock layup, but Gaugler hit back-to-back threes with the final one coming with just three second left in the half to give Skidmore a 33-25 halftime lead.
 
In the second half, Skidmore pushed its lead to 15 as Lindsey Davis hit a three to cap a 9-2 run to open the second half.  The Engineers once again battled back and went outscored the Thoroughbreds 23-8 over the next 13 minutes and tied it up on a three-point play from Wetmore with 1:57 remaining.
 
Skidmore answered right back behind a Gargiso three-pointer and closed the game on a 9-0 run with Gargiso accounting for six of the final nine points as the Thoroughbreds earned the 59-50 win.
 
Skidmore shot 40% (21-for-52) compared to 27% (17-for-62) for RPI.
 
The Thoroughbreds host Union, tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
