Megan Gaugler scored five of Skidmore College's nine points in overtime as the Thoroughbreds outlasted William Smith College 60-53 in a Liberty League basketball contest in Bristol Gym tonight. She finished with a game-high 18 points and a team-high four assists.
Gaugler was joined in double figures by
Christina Gargiso and
Angela Botiba who recorded 13 and 12 points, respectively. Botiba also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and blocked four shots.
Jaimie Rubin and Sasha Borenstein shared team-high honors for the Herons with 12 points apiece.
Neither team was particularly sharp in the first half, combining to shoot 20-of-63 from the floor (.317). Skidmore was able to build a 7-point lead early, but William Smith battled back to briefly take the lead on sophomore forward Molly Breen's traditional 3-point play, but Thoroughbred Gargiso made a pair of free throws with 40 seconds left in the half to send her team into halftime with a 26-25 lead.
Botiba and Gargiso had eight points apiece to lead all first half scorers.
Skidmore started the second half on an 8-2 run to stretch its lead to seven, but roared back with 11 unanswered points for its first lead of the game. Sydni Salvatore, Rubin, and Borenstein drained consecutive 3-pointers to fuel the comeback. Gaugler ended the run with one of her three treys. From that point on, neither team led by more than three points.
With the Thoroughbreds leading 51-49 with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, Salvatore toed the free throw line and calmly sank two to tie the game. Skidmore had the final shot of the second half, but it was off the mark.
The teams traded baskets to start OT.
Jessie Kavana put her team in front for good with 3:37 remaining. Following a two-and-a-half-minute cold spell for both teams, Gaugler scored the final five points of the game to secure the victory.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 11, when the Herons host Rensselaer. Skidmore also returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 11, when the Thoroughbreds visit RIT. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 2 p.m.
