Ella Scheuerell hit a pair of free throws with one second left to secure a 56-54 Skidmore win over Potsdam in Monday night's non-league women's basketball matchup at Welsh Gymnasium.
The Thoroughbreds pick up their first win of the year to improve to 1-2, while the Bears fall to 0-3.
Skidmore fell behind by eight in the first half after a Hannah Kmiecinski jumper for Potsdam, but the Thoroughbreds went on a 12-2 run capped by a Scheuerell jumper to take an 18-16 lead. Skidmore maintained the lead for the remainder of the half and held a 29-23 lead at the break.
In the second half, the teams battled back and forth before a 7-0 run behind five points from Scheuerell gave the Thoroughbreds a 50-42 lead with 4:25 left. The Bears responded with a 10-0 run highlighted by six points from Bailey Weigel to take a 52-50 lead.
Logan Frederick tied it up with a pair of free throws before Weigel gave Potsdam the lead right back. With 33 seconds left,

Angela Botiba for a layup to tie it up at 54-54. After a miss by the Bears, Frederick grabbed the rebound with nine seconds left. McLaughlin pushed the ball up court and Scheuerell was fouled with one second remaining. Scheuerell went on to hit both free throws and secure the 56-54 win.
Scheuerell led all scorers with 16 points and Frederick registered a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. McLaughlin added nine points for Skidmore.
For Potsdam, Jessica Kouzan had a team-high 14 points and Weigel turned in a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Thoroughbreds shot 38.0% from the floor and held a 29-7 advantage in bench points.
Skidmore returns to action on Nov. 29 when they host Albany College of Pharmacy for a 7 p.m. tip.
