Skidmore falls to Ithaca in Skidmore Invitational final

Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - Ithaca and Tufts finished off perfect weekends with wins Saturday in the final day of the 2012 Skidmore Women's Basketball Invitational.  The Jumbos opened the day with a 46-38 victory over Hamilton and the Bombers closed out the weekend with a 76-50 win over host Skidmore.

Both Ithaca and Tufts are now 2-0 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds and Continentals fall to 0-2.

In the final game of the weekend, Tournament MVP Kathryn Campbell scored 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting to lead Ithaca.

The teams put on an offensive clinic in the first half as the Bombers shot 47.1% from the floor and Skidmore shot 52.4% including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc as Ithaca held a 38-33 lead at half.

In the second half, Ithaca continued to shoot well while the Thoroughbreds were unable to keep up.  Ally Mnich scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half as the Bombers were 58.3 % (14-for-24) from the field and outscored Skidmore 38-17 in the second half to secure the victory.

Campbell was joined on the All-Tournament team by Geena Brady.  Devin Shea added 10 points for Ithaca.

Angela Botiba earned All-Tournament honors for Skidmore as she finished with eight points, five rebounds and three blocks.  Skylar Caligaris and Jordyn Wartts finished with 12 points apiece to lead the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore returns to action on Monday at Potsdam for an 8 p.m. tip.

In the day's first game, Hayley Kanner put up 13 points and six rebounds off the bench to lift the Jumbos to the victory.

The first half saw six ties and three lead changes but a 6-0 run over the final 53 seconds gave Tufts a 25-21 lead at the break.

A layup from Samantha Graber cut the lead to two points at 25-23, but that's as close as Hamilton would get as the Jumbo defense held the Continentals to just 25% shooting in the second half.  Tufts pushed its lead to as many as 13 after a three-point play from Kanner a 9:26 made it a 39-26 game.  Hamilton would get as close as seven after a Dani Feigin three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining but it was too late as Tufts earned the 46-38 victory.

Kanner earned All-Tournament team honors for her big game and was joined by teammate Hannah Foley who finished with nine points and four rebounds.  Ali Rocchi pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds as the Jumbos held a 46-33 advantage in rebounding.

For the Continentals, All-Tournament team selection Eliza Howe had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds.  Feigin chipped in with 11 points and Madie Harlem added seven points and eight rebounds.
