Balanced attack leads Skidmore past RIT

Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Four players scored in double figures to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball team to a 67-51 win over RIT in Saturday's Liberty League matchup at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Tigers fall to 5-6 overall and 1-1 Liberty.

Christina Gargiso scored 20 points to go with seven rebounds and five steals, while Megan Gaugler had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Skidmore.  Jordyn Wartts added 10 points and five assists and Angela Botiba finished with 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks off the bench.

For RIT, Leslie Havens tallied a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds and Courtney Tennant came off the bench to pour in 15.

The teams battled back and forth early as RIT tied it up at 23-23 on a three from Havens at 4:11.  But senior Jessie Kavana answered back with a three, breaking the tie and sparking an 11-0 run over the final 3:41 to give the Thoroughbreds a 34-23 lead at the break.

Skidmore controlled the tempo in the second half, never letting the Tigers get closer than seven and extending their lead to as many as 23 on a Wartts layup with 4:35 remaining, going on to the eventual 67-51 win.

The Thoroughbreds shot 42.6% (26-61) from the floor, while holding RIT to 28.6% (18-63) and scored 21 points off 19 Tiger turnovers.

Skidmore hosts Bard on Jan. 13, while RIT hosts St. Lawrence, both games are scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
