SCHENECTADY, NY -- A bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth by Becky Gronczniak lifted Union to a 6-5 victory in the second game of a Liberty League softball doubleheader against Skidmore Friday at Alexander Field. Alyssa Wolejko struck out 10 and had two hits and two RBIs in an opening 10-2 win that ended in six innings.
With the sweep, Union improved to 3-1 in the Liberty League (9-19 overall). The Thoroughbreds fell to 0-4 in the league and 10-14 overall.
Samantha Chevalier gave the Dutchwomen a 4-2 lead in game two, when she hit a three run homer in the bottom of the fifth. But
Caitlin Ketcham regained the lead for Skidmore with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth, making it 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh, with two out and runners on first and second both via the walk, a fielder's choice play to second produced an error that kept the inning alive and also plated the tying run. After a walk to load the bases, Gronczniak singled in the game winner.
Sarah Logan earned her first Union win of the season, allowign one hit and striking out one in two innings. Along with Chevalier's plate work, Carson Mehl, Lauren Hoffman and Gronczniak had two hits each.
Julia Schwartz had two of Skidmore's five hits and
Abby Fuhrman tok the loss.
In the opener, the Dutchwomen jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. After Skidmore added two in the fourth, the Dutchwomen led 8-2 after four and won it with the eight run lead coming on a two run double by Wolejko with two out in the sixth. The freshman pitcher allowed five hits and struck out a career high 10 in the win. Chevalier had three hits and a Rachel Noall added two hits in the 12 hit Union attack.
