Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team completed the season sweep of William Smith with Saturday's 56-49 win at the Williamson Sports Center.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 10-10 overall and 6-4 in the league, while the Herons fall to 10-10 and 5-4.
Neither team shot well from the field in the first half but William Smith was able to mount a 10 point lead on a Liz Douglass layup with 3:12 remaining in the first half. Skidmore cut into the lead, scoring the final six points of the half and trailed 22-18 at the break.
The Herons scored the first four points of the second half but the Thoroughbreds went on a 16-2 run over the next six and a half minutes, capped by Jordan Wartts' layup with 12:22 remaining. Skidmore pushed its lead to 11 after a pair of free throw from
Megan Gaugler at 5:44. William Smith battler back and was able to get the lead down to 45-43 after another Douglass layup but wouldn't come any closer as Skidmore finished 7-for-8 from the line down the stretch to seal the 56-49 victory.
Gaugler finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks to lead the Thoroughbreds. Gargiso added 11 points and seven rebounds while
Christine Kemp added six points and five assists and
Ismatu Alison-Konteh chipped in with eight rebounds off the bench.
Mollie Danahy led the Herons with 20 points to go along with five rebounds and Kristen Kush recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Douglass added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Skidmore finished 20-of-29 from the line, including 14-of-16 in the second half compared to 11-for-16 for William Smith.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on Feb. 11 at RPI.
