Thoroughbreds hold off late rally to top Hamilton, 56-50

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team held off a late surge from Hamilton to earn a 56-50 win in Liberty League action, Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds improve to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in the league, while the Continentals fall to 7-9 and 1-6.
 
With the game tied 8-8, Skidmore went on a 15-0 run on five consecutive three pointers, three coming from Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) and two from Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.). Both teams played even through the rest of the half with the Thoroughbreds taking a 33-22 lead in to the half.
 
Skidmore held a 17 point lead after Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) hit a three with 15:18 remaining in the game, but Hamilton was able to battle back. The Continentals came within one point on Eliza Howe's three pointer with 2:08 remaining but Skidmore tightened up on defense and hit 5-of-6 from the line in the final two minutes and prevail with a 56-50 win.
 
Gaugler finished with 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and three blocks to lead the Thoroughbreds. Gargiso added 14 points and seven rebounds and Kemp finished with a game high seven assists.
 
Howe led the way for Hamilton, scoring 12 of her 17 points in the second half and Madie Harlem chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds and five assists.
 
Both teams stayed out of foul trouble as they combined to commit just 19 fouls in the game.
 
Skidmore hosts William Smith for a 2 p.m. tip, tomorrow afternoon at the Williamson Sports Center.
