SCHENECTADY, NY -- Megan Gaugler recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Skidmore College women's basketball team fell to Union, 67-64 in Liberty League action at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.
The Dutchwomen took over sole posession of first place in the league with a 6-2 record, and improved to 11-5 overall. The Thoroughbreds fell to 4-4 in the league and 8-10 overall.
Skidmore had three players in double figures, led by Gaugler's double double of 19 points and a game high 10 rebounds.
Christina Gargiso scored 18 points with five boards and
Logan Frederick also had five boards with her 11 points. Skidmore also shot 36% for the game.
Lauren McCormick
scored 19 points and Brittney Kenney scored a career high 16 off the bench to lead Union.
Lauren Hennessey added 10 for the Dutchwomen, while McCormick and
Leah Pepehad seven rebounds each.
Union shot 36% for the night and had a strong 42-28 rebounding edge.
The Thoroughbreds led 29-25 at halftime, and took a six point lead 12 seconds into the second half on a jumper by Frederick. But Union took a one point lead at 39-38 with 12:38 left on a three pointer by Kenney. With Skidmore up one at 42-41 with 11:18 left, Union went on a 6-0 run for a 48-42 lead with 9:43 left, but the guests tied it right up at 53-53 with 5:42 remaining. After the ninth tie of the night at 57-57 with 2:16 remaining, Union scored six straight in 1:46 for a 63-57 lead featuring four points by McCormick. Gargiso made a three with three seconds left for the three point deficit before time ran out.
The Thoroughbreds host a pair of Liberty League games this weekend, Friday vs. Hamilton and Saturday vs. William Smith.
