Thoroughbreds power past Middlebury, 64-51

Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team earned a 64-51 win over Middlebury, Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 5-1, while the Panthers fall to 3-4.

Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) led all scorers with 25 points and Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting for Skidmore.  Jordyn Wartts (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with six points, six assists and five steals.

For Middlebury, Maddie Moreau (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) led the way with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Stephany Surrette (Worcester, Mass.) and Sarah Marcus (Williamsville, N.Y.) each chipped in with nine.

The teams traded baskets for most of the first half with the Panthers leading by as many as six after a three-point play from Surrette with 4:48 remaining.  Trailing 28-22, the Thoroughbreds outscored Middlebury 12-2 over the final four minutes highlighted by an 8-0 run during the final minute in which they forced three turnovers, to take a 34-30 lead into the break. 

Skidmore stayed hot to start the second half, scoring the first seven points and pushing the lead to 11 on Christina Gargiso's (Staten Island, N.Y.) three pointer.  The Panthers got as close as five points after Rachel Crews (South Burlington, Vt.) layup, but back-to-back baskets from Frederick and a three from Gaugler pushed the lead to 12 for the Thoroughbreds as they controlled the remainder of the game for the 64-51 victory.

Both teams shot well as Skidmore finished 26-for-58 (44.8%) and Middlebury was 21-of-46 (45.7%).  The Thoroughbreds held a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint and scored 21 points off 24 Panther turnovers.

Skidmore resumes play on Jan. 1, when they take on Western Connecticut St. in the first game of the Springfield Holiday Inn Tournament.  Middlebury hosts Tufts in league play on Jan. 2.
