Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team earned a decisive 65-39 victory over Ursinus in the first game of the 2011 Skidmore Invitational, Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-0 on the season, while it was the first game of the season for the Bears.
Skidmore used a 17-1 run over the final 7:03 of the first half to seize control of the game. Five different players scored and the Thoroughbred defense forced eight turnovers during the run to give Skidmore a 29-17 lead at the break.
In the second half, Ursinus cut the lead to nine points on a basket from Jackie Thomas at 13:53 , but were unable to get any closer as the Thoroughbreds shot 50% from the floor in the second half en route to a 65-39 victory.
Megan Gaugler and
Jessie Kavana each had a game-high 14 points. Gaugler added six rebounds and two blocks, while Kavana finished with four steals.
Angela Botiba scored 10 points off the bench and
Christina Gargiso had eight points and a career-high seven steals.
Jordyn Wartts finished with three assists and six steals.
For the Bears, Lindsay Teuber had a team-high eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. Diamond Lewis had six points and three rebounds to go along with three steals and Liz Martin tallied six points and five boards.
Skidmore scored 39 points off 28 Ursinus turnovers and had 21 steals, while shooting 23-of-51 (45.1%) from the floor compared to 16-of-49 (32.7%) for the Bears.
Ursinus takes on Utica tomorrow at 2 p.m. in game two of the Skidmore Invitational and the Thoroughbreds close it out on Sunday, taking on the Pioneers at 2 p.m.
