RPI pulls away late to beat Thoroughbreds, 74-59

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – RPI went on a 14-0 run late in the second half to pull away as the Skidmore College women's basketball team suffered a 74-59 loss in Saturday afternoon's Liberty League action at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Thoroughbreds drop to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers improve to 8-10 overall and 4-3 league.

The teams traded baskets through most of the first half but after Michela Ottati's (Fort Johnson, N.Y./Averill Park) three-pointer tied it at 12-12, RPI went on a 17-5 run capped by Sarah Wetmore's layup with 8:12 remaining. The Thoroughbreds answered right back with a run of their own and pulled within one on Christine Kemp's (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) steal and layup to cut the lead to 29-28. RPI quickly got the lead but up and took a 40-33 lead into the half.

In the second half, Skidmore chipped away at the lead and tied it at 49-49 on Ottati's sixth three-pointer of the game but went cold down the stretch, getting outscored 25-8 over the final 11:32 as the Engineers pulled away for a 74-59 win.

Ottati led the Thoroughbreds with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 15 points and Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) recorded her third consecutive game with double-digit rebounds as she pulled down a game-high 11 and Kemp dished out a game-high eight assists.

Wetmore had a game-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go along with six rebounds and four assists to lead RPI. Hillary McKinley came off the bench to record 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals and Allson Connor added 15.

RPI held a 29-4 advantage in points off the bench and shot 14-of-21 from the free throw line compared to 2-for-4 for Skidmore.

The Thoroughbreds return to action on Tuesday at Union for a 6 p.m. tip.
