Women’s basketball downs Vassar, 68-62

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team earned a 68-62 Liberty League win over Vassar, Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the league, while the Brewers drop to 10-7 and 4-2.
 
Skidmore came out and scored the first nine points of the game, but Vassar came right back and went on a 14-2 run to take the lead. Both teams battled back and forth throughout the first half with neither able to grab a lead larger than four. After Ali Higgins' three-pointer gave Vassar a 29-26 advantage with 3:12 left in the half, Skidmore closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a 33-29 lead into the break.
 
The Thoroughbreds never lost the lead in the second half, pushing their lead to as many as 14 points on a Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) layup with 6:15 remaining in the game. The Brewers fought back but couldn't get any closer than within six points on Cydni Matsuoka layup with one second remaining as Skidmore picked up the 68-62 victory.
 
Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a team-high 18 points for the Thoroughbreds to go along with five rebounds. Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) added 16 points with 4 assists and four steals and Frederick recorded her second straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) finished with a game-high six assists for Skidmore.
 
Matsuoka had a game-high 25 points on 9-15 shooting and 6-8 shooting from beyond the arc for Vassar. Hannah Senftleber chipped in with 14 points and Carolyn Crampton added seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.
 
The Thoroughbreds held a 40-27 rebounding advantage while shooting 51.9% from the floor compared to 34.4% for the Brewers.
 
Skidmore hosts Rensselaer on Saturday at 2 p.m.
