#13 Union holds off Skidmore 14-12 in Liberty opener

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College women's lacrosse gave 13th ranked Union College all it could handle before dropping a tight 14-12 Liberty League contest, Wednesday night at Wachenheim Field.

The Dutchwomen are 3-4 overall and 1-0 in Liberty League play, while the Thoroughbreds fall to 4-3 and 0-1.

Union took a late 5-2 first half lead, with five different players scoring. Skidmore's Kimberly Segalas scored goals 27 seconds apart to cut the lead to 5-4 at the half.

The Dutchwomen opened the second half with goals by Kristin Joyce and Allie Cuozzo to make it 7-4. Lindsay Stavola cut it back to two 7-5 with her 18th goal of the season at 23:46. The teams traded goals with Tory Cameron scoring her first of the season for Union at 21:45 and Lauren Madden scoring at 18:50 for the Thoroughbreds to keep it within two, 8-6.

Union scored six of the next eight goals to take its biggest lead of the game, 14-8 with 8:32 to play.

Skidmore didn't quit, fighting back with four straight goals over the final 4:38 to get back in the game. Lauren McCarthy opened the run at 4:38. Madden scored at 4:38 and Abbie Klaus scored at 2:25. Madden caused a turnover and scored her 21st goal of the season with :35 to play to make it 14-12.

Play was then halted for 32 minutes because of lighting. When the teams returned to the field, Chelsea Charette won the draw control for Union and the Dutchwomen were able to run out the clock.

For Skidmore, Madden finished with six goals and five ground balls. Segalas and McCarthy had two goals each, with McCarthy adding five draw controls. Rachel Klein had eight saves in goal.

Joyce and Cuozzo scored four each for Union. Charette and Cameron each scored twice. Cat Ruggiero had 10 saves in net.

Skidmore is home again on Friday against Rensselaer at 4 p.m. Union is also home on Friday at 4 p.m. against Vassar.
