Skidmore women’s lax keeps playoff hopes alive with 11-8 win

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Lauren Madden scored four goals and Kimberly Segalas added three goals and an assist to lead the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team to an 11-8 Liberty League win over Clarkson University, Saturday at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds even their record at 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League. With two league games to play, Skidmore is a half game behind Rensselaer (4-3) for the fourth and final Liberty League playoff spot. Clarkson is 6-9 and 0-8.

Skidmore got off to another fast start, taking a 3-0 lead on goals by Segalas, Lindsay Stavola, and Abbie Klaus. Clarkson rebounded with a 3-0 run of its own to tie it 3-3. Kimberly Loucks, Alyssa Cristaldi, and Katie VanDeValk scored for the Golden Knights.

Segalas and Madden scored to give the Thoroughbreds a 5-3 lead at the half.

Stavola opened the second with her 32nd goal of the season, from Stavola to make it 6-3. VanDeValk kept it close with a free position goal at 23:31. Skidmore then ran off four straight to lead 10-4. Madden scored twice with Segalas and Sydney Weill getting one each.

Cammie Hayes stopped the run with Clarkson's fifth goal with 8:03 to play. Madden responded with her 40th goal of the season on a free position with 7:44 left to make it 11-5. The Golden Knights ended the game with a three-straight goals, with Alyssa Cristaldi scoring the final goal of the run with 2:43 to play, cutting the lead 11-8. Skidmore was able to control the ball the final two minutes for the win.

In addition to her four goals, Madden added four ground balls and a caused turnover. Segalas had three draws. Stavola finished with two goals and an assist. Amber Kinsey had another outstanding game with five ground balls, four draws, and two caused turnovers. Thoroughbred goalie Rachel Klein totaled six saves.

For Clarkson, VanDeValk, Hayes, Cristaldi, and Loucks had two goals each. Golden Knight goalie Hannah Walters kept her team in the game with 19 saves.

The teams combined for 44 fouls. Skidmore forced 21 Clarkson turnovers and held a 30-25 ground ball advantage.

Skidmore will host Middlebury College in a non-league game Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
