Thoroughbreds use walk-off to earn split with Union

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team split Saturday's Liberty League doubleheader with Union, winning game one 5-4 in eight innings and dropping the second game, 6-0.

The Thoroughbreds are now 19-11 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the Dutchwomen are now 20-8 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League.
Game One
In the opener, senior Arielle Manstein (Elkins Park, Pa.) hit a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to lead Skidmore to a 5-4 game one victory.
After falling behind 1-0, the Thoroughbreds picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Carol Brown (Seattle, Wash.) single and an RBI groundout from Tara DeGeorge (Seaford, N.Y.) to take the lead.
Union came right back in the top of the fifth when Nina Cervini had a bases-loaded RBI single to tie it up and tried to take the lead on the play but Brown gunned out pinch-runner Elizabeth Hackert at the plate for the final out of the inning.
Skidmore took the lead late when Michelle Anderson (Alfred, N.Y.) tagged up on a fly ball and scored on an errant throw from the outfield to make it a 3-2 game. The Dutchwomen would continue to fight as pinch-hitter Alexandra King drove a triple to deep left with one out in the 7th and Callee Heywood hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Becky Gronczniak to tie it up.
In the top of the eight, Ashley Kovack led off with a double and later scored on an RBI groundout from Hannah Fandl to take the 4-3 lead.
With one out and runners on first and second, Manstein drove a pitch to the opposite field, scoring Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Anderson and earning the Thoroughbreds their first league win of the season.
Sam Crose (Assonet, Mass.) allowed four runs (three earned) in eight innings of work to improve to 12-6 for Skidmore. Ginni Sack took the loss for Union, allowing five runs (two earned) in 7.1 innings.
Game Two
In the nightcap, the Dutchwomen took advantage of Thoroughbred errors, posting a five-run fifth and Tiffany Ippoliti tossed a complete-game shutout to help Union to a 6-0 win and the split.
After a scoreless first four innings, Heywood and Diana Polli had back-to-back RBI singles in the 5th to make it 2-0 in favor of the Dutchwomen. Union added three more runs in the fifth on an error and a pair of RBI singles from King and Alicia Jones. They would add another run in the sixth on a throwing error to make it 6-0.
Ippoliti allowed no runs on two hits, while striking out eight to earn the win for the Dutchwomen. Abby Fuhrman (Amherst, Mass.) took the loss for Skidmore, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Heywood, King and Jones each had two hits and an RBI in the second game for Union, while Brown and DeGeorge each had a hit for the Thoroughbreds.
Skidmore hosts Williams at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 in their final regular season home contest, while Union hosts Oswego on the 27th.
