Big second half carries #19 Amherst past Skidmore 13-7

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Amherst College used a 5-0 run early in the second half on the way to a 13-7 win over Skidmore College, Tuesday night in non-conference women's lacrosse action, at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds are 6-6 overall, while the 19th ranked Lord Jeffs improve to 8-4.

Skidmore jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Kimberly Segalas and Lauren Madden. Amherst ran off three straight to go back on top 3-2. Hillary Denson scored twice from Kelley Trapp and Marta Randall capped the run at 19:25. The teams traded goals to end the half, with Lauren McCarthy powering her way to the net to tie it 3-3 for the Thoroughbreds at 15:16 and Denson scoring at 7:38 to give the Lord Jeffs the 4-3 lead at the break.

McCarthy opened the second half with her 17th goal of the season at 28:49 to make it 4-4, but Amherst responded by scoring five straight to open a 9-4 lead. Hannah Walker and Marta Randall had two goals each during the run. McCarthy stopped the run with a free position goal at 15:27 to make it 9-5, but that was as close as the Thoroughbreds would get.

McCarthy led the Thoroughbreds with three goals and an assist. Segalas and Madden had two goals each. Amber Kinsey had a good game on defense with four ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers.

Randall finished with four goals for Amherst, while Walker and Denson had three each. Claire Bennett contributed four ground balls, three draws, and two caused turnovers.

Amherst outshot Skidmore 24-14. Thoroughbred goalie Rachel Klein had seven saves, while Lamia Harik stopped five shots for the Lord Jeffs.

Skidmore returns to Liberty League play on Friday, when the Thoroughbreds host St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. Amherst will host Wesleyan on Saturday at 12 p.m.
