Thoroughbreds drop two to Rochester

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team dropped its Liberty League opener 8-1, 4-0 to Rochester in Saturday's doubleheader at Thoroughbred Field. 
 
The Thoroughbreds fall to 16-10 overall and 0-2 in the league and the Yellowjackets improve to 17-10 overall and 2-0 in league play. It was the Liberty League opener for both schools.
 
Game 1
 
In the first game Rochester used the long ball with three home runs and a triple, scoring eight runs on 12 hits.    Up 2-0, Lindsay Macaluso hit a solo shot over the right center field fence in the fourth for the Yellowjackets to make it 3-0. 
 
In the fifth, Kim Grimes tripled and then scored on a two-run homer by Erin Clark. Later in the inning, pitcher Madeline Skellie helped herself out with a two-run homer of her own to open the UR lead to 7-0. The Yellowjackets added an unearned run in the sixth for an 8-0 lead.
 
Skidmore got on the board in the sixth when Julia Schwartz doubled and scored on a Cora Crafts single.
 
For Rochester, Katie McLean, M.C. Wagner, and Clark had two hits each. Skellie improved to 7-3, allowing one run on six hits and two walks. She had five strikeouts.
 
Schwartz was 2-3 for the Thoroughbreds. Sam Crose took the loss to fall to 10-6.   She allowed more than two earned runs for the first time in 12 games.
 
Game 2
 
In the nightcap, the Yellowjackets got on the board early and Sara Hutchinson was able to hold Skidmore scoreless to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 victory.
 
Macaluso led off the game with a double and later came around to score on a Nikki Lee DiSalvio groundout for the early 1-0 lead. 
 
After Rochester added another run in the third, Wagner scored Kim Grimes on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Melissa Altermose made it 4-0 in the sixth with an RBI on a bases-loaded infield single.
 
Skidmore hit the ball hard but were never able to find the gaps as Hutchinson improved to 10-6 with the complete game victory.
 
Abby Fuhrman pitched well in defeat the Thoroughbreds, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out four in the complete game effort.

Skidmore returns to action on April 22 at MCLA.
