Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team withstood a late Vassar College rally for a 13-12 Liberty League win, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds are 5-4 overall and 1-2 in Liberty play, while the Brewers fall to 4-6 and 0-4.
Kimberly Segalas (Stamford, Conn./King & Low-Heywood) broke a 12-12 tie with a free position goal with 1:21 left in regulation. The Brewers had a chance to tie it with 10 seconds left, but Thoroughbred goalie
Rachel Klein saved a free position shot by Elizabeth Feltch to preserve the win.
Skidmore built a 5-2 first half lead on goals by five different players. Vassar responded by scoring four straight, including a pair by Sarah Warner to take a 6-5 lead with 6:53 to play. The Thoroughbreds came back with consecutive goals by
Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) at 3:10 and
Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) at 1:31 to go back on top, 7-6. Vassar's Larisa Lasko scored with 12 seconds to play in the half to send the teams into the break tied 7-7.
Lasko opened the second half with a goal at 29:31, giving the Brewers their final lead of the game, 8-7. Skidmore scored the next four to open an 11-8 advantage. Madden had a pair and
Ceilidh MacNeill (Framingham, Mass./St. Mark's) and
Abbie Klaus (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) had solo tallies in the run.
Vassar regrouped with consecutive goals by Feltch at 12:36 and Lasko at 11:27 to pull within one 11-10. Klaus then used a spin move to get past her defender and rifled a shot past Brewer goalie Nicole Engelhardt at 11:07 to make it 12-10. Vassar patiently came back to tie it 12-12 with goals by Feltch at 8:39 and Allie Morgan at 4:03.
With under two minutes to play, Segalas got past two Vassar defenders before being fouled, setting up her free position game-winner. She then won the draw control, allowing Skidmore to kill off almost a minute before the Brewers got the ball back for the final attempt.
Segalas finished with two goals, three assists, four ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Madden had four goals, one assist, and four draws, Klause scored three goals, and McCarthy had two goals. Klein had a big game in net with 10 saves and five ground balls.
Warner ended the game with three goals and an assist. Lasko had three goals, and Feltch had two goals and an assist. Engelhardt finished with nine saves.
Skidmore is at Williams on April 14.
