Softball opens up spring trip with two victories

Kissimmee, Fla. - The Skidmore College Softball team opened its 2010 season with a bang, picking up wins over MCLA and Catholic University at the Rebel Springs Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Thoroughbred's pitching duo of Sam Crose and Abby Fuhrman combined for 14 innings of shut out softball as Skidmore defeated MCLA 3-0 and Catholic University 1-0.

Crose picked up the first win of the day against regional rival MCLA going seven innings giving up only two hits, striking out nine and giving up no runs. Lauren Dinsdale drove a double to right field and then came around to score the Thoroughbred's first run on an RBI by Christina Gargiso. The Thoroughbred's came right back in the third to cushion their lead with two more runs triggered by a lead off single by Michelle Anderson.

The second game of the day opened with Fuhrman on the mound in her collegiate debut. Fuhrman threw four strong innings, shutting out Catholic University, scattering five hits while striking out eight. Crose relieved Fuhrman after the fourth inning in a 0-0 game and ended up picking up her second win of the day. Crose fired three shut out innings, giving up only one hit and striking out three.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh with the score tied 0-0, Caitlin Ketcham, Tara DeGeorge, and Lauren Tobias all drew key walks with one out to load the bases for Thoroughbreds. Anderson stepped to the plate and delivered the game winning hit with a drive to shortstop to score Ketcham and seal the second win of the day.

The Thoroughbreds are back in action on Sunday, March 14, facing Rutgers Newark at 3PM and Nichols College at 5PM.
