Thoroughbreds win Liberty League title

  Saratoga Springs, N.Y.--The Skidmore College women's basketball team beat Vassar College 58-52 to win the Liberty League regular-season title Saturday in front of a full house on Senior Day at the Sports & Recreation Center.

The Thoroughbreds are 19-3 overall and 11-1 with two Liberty League games remaining. Skidmore will host the tournament championship Feb. 26-27 at the Sports and Recreation Center. Vassar falls to 8-13 and 4-7.

Skidmore has won seven straight and 11 of 12. The 19 wins is the second most in program history, two off the record of 21 set in the 1995-96 season.

Vassar got out of the gate quickly in the first half with an 8-2 run to open the game. It would be the only time the Brewers would lead in the game. Skidmore responded with a 17-2 run to lead by seven. Senior Sharlyn Harper( New York, N.Y./Holderness) hit three three-point field goals in the run, while Megan Gaugler(Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) added five points and two assists.

The Thoroughbreds took a 29-20 lead into the break after holding the Brewers to 7-25 (28%) from the floor.

Skidmore came out strong in the second, keeping Vassar off the board for the five minutes of the half to build a 34-20 lead. The Brewers made several runs at the Thoroughbreds, but were never able to close get closer than four, even as Skidmore played all 14 players.

Harper finished with 15 points. Gaugler had 11 points and eight assists, while Amber Kinsey(Troy, N.Y./Lansingburgh) added 13 points.

Emily Haeuser (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) led Vassar with 20 points, while Brittany Parks (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) scored 19, 14 of those coming in the second half.

Skidmore will close out the regular season next weekend at St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
