Cortland pulls away for 74-57 win over Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- SUNY Cortland put four starters in double figures in a 74-57 win over Skidmore College in the second round of the 33rd Annual Skidmore College Women's Basketball Invitational at the Williamson Sports Center.

SUNY Oneonta beat St. John Fisher College 82-75 in double overtime in the other second round game. Cortland and Oneonta both went 2-0 in the predetermined pairings.

Skidmore falls to 1-2, while the Red Dragons are off to a 3-0 start. The Thoroughbreds are at Hartwick on Nov. 30.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Molly Byrne gave Cortland its first lead of the game, 11-9, with a lay-up at the 11:34 mark of the first half. The Red Dragons never trailed after that, extending the lead to 38-28 at the half and to as many as 18 in the second half.

Megan Gaugler and Christine Gargiso scored 11 points each to lead the Thoroughbreds. Gaugler, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, added seven rebounds and two blocks. Michela Ottati and Logan Frederick had eight points.

Byrne finished with 17 points. Brittany Cohen made the all-tournament team with 16 points and six assists. Micki Volpini scored 11 points and Jennifer Patten was also in double figures with 12 points.

In the first game, Oneonta's Gabi Regan hit a three-pointer with two seconds to play in regulation to tie the game 61-61.

In the first overtime, St. John Fisher's Jessica Krzemien forced a second OT with a lay-up with 16 seconds to play.

The Red Dragons dominated the second extra session, outscoring Fisher 15-8. Ten of Oneonta's 15 points came from the free throw line, with Madison Slagle mixing in a key three-pointer.

Slagle finished with 20 points to earn a spot on the all-tournament team along with teammate Samantha Szkotak who scored 18 points.

Colleen Maloney was an all-tournament pick for St. John Fisher with a team-high 19 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. The Cardinals forced 31 Oneonta turnovers.
