Skidmore women overpower Middlebury 68-52

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Senior guard Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y./Holderness) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball team to a 68-52 win over Middlebury College, Saturday at the Sports and Recreation Center.

 

The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-3, while the Panthers had their five-game win streak snapped to drop to 6-4.

 

Harper scored 15 in the first half, including five in an 8-0 run to open the game.  Middlebury answered with an 8-0 run of its own to tie it 8-8, but Harper hit a three to end the run and put Skidmore in front 11-8 at the 15:58 mark.  The Thoroughbreds would continue to lead for the remainder of the half, taking a 31-27 lead into the break.

 

The Panthers hung around for awhile in the second half, taking their only lead of the game, 38-36,  with 14:50 to play on a Brittany Perfetti three-pointer.  That would be the only Middlebury field goal over the next nine minutes with Skidmore putting the game away with  22-4 run to take a 62-46 lead on the way to the 68-52 win.

 

Harper, one of four Thoroughbreds in double figures,  added three assists, three blocks, and three steals.  Megan Gaugler  (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting to go along with four blocks.  Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) chipped in 10 points and Christine Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Tech.) scored 10 points and had three steals off the bench.

 

Perfetti finished with 13 points to lead the Panthers. Kaitlyn Fallon scored nine points and had six rebounds, while Stephany Surrette chipped in seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.

 

Skidmore scored 32 points off 27 Middlebury turnovers.  The Thoroughbreds shot 48 percent from the floor and hit 9-of-16 threes, while holding the Panthers to 30 percent from the floor.

 

Skidmore opens Liberty League play on the road Tuesday against Union College at 6 p.m.
