Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team picked up its 10th win of the season by defeating William Smith 66-49 in Friday night's Liberty League matchup at the Sports and Recreation Center.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-0 in the league and 10-2 overall, while the Herons fall to 0-2 league and 4-8 overall.
Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) led the way for Skidmore, scoring 15 of her game-high 22 points in the second half while dishing out five assists and grabbing four rebounds.
Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 13 points off the bench to go along with nine points and nine rebounds from
Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) and
Kelly Bischoff (Pensacola, Fla.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, nine of them in the first half.
The Thoroughbreds led right from the opening tip and were able to push their lead to as many as 12 points in the first ten minutes. The Herons fought back though and were able to cut the lead down to one on a three-pointer from Sydni Sylvatore with 4:05 remaining in the half. Skidmore answered right back with back-to-back three's from Harper and Bischoff and closed out the first half with a 10-2 run to take a 31-22 lead into halftime.
William Smith was able to cut the lead to five but the Thoroughbreds used a 13-0 run, highlighted by a four-point play from Harper, to push the lead back up to 18 and never looked back. Skidmore didn't allow the Herons to get closer than 13 and led by as many as 19 in the final fifteen minutes.
As a team, the Thoroughbreds outscored William Smith's bench, 18-3 while shooting 50% from beyond the arc.
Mollie Danahy led four players in double-figures for the Herons with 14 points. Julie Hooper added 10 points while Kristen Bush and Ashlinn Barber each contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
Skidmore will host Hamilton in a Liberty League contest, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
