Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Freshman pitcher Sam Crose (Assonet, Mass.) had nine strikeouts in a complete-game effort to propel the Skidmore College softball team to a 2-0 defeat of SUNY Cobleskill Friday afternoon.
Game two was cancelled due to heavy rains.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-7 on the season while the Fighting Tigers fall to 1-4.
Skidmore got on the board in the second inning, when sophomore Caitlin Ketcham (North Clarendon, Vt.) singled, stole second base, and was driven in by freshman Derrin Jarvis' (Harvard, Mass.) two-out single to center to put the Thoroughbreds up by one.
Ketcham gave the home squad a 2-0 cushion in the fourth when she crushed her sixth homerun of the season over the center field fence that proved to be the game's final run.
Skidmore was led by Ketcham, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Crose continued to be a solid force on the mound for the Thoroughbreds, picking up her eighth win of the season and allowing just three hits in seven innings.
Sophomores Nicole Garzon (Bayside Hills, N.Y.) and Kristine Gardner (Odessa, N.Y.) and junior Anastasia Yakaboski (Riverhead, N.Y.) each had a hit for Cobleskill.
Skidmore will play Green Mountain College in a home doubleheader on April 5 at 12 p.m.
