Softball earns split with Utica

Utica, N.Y.-- Freshman pitcher Sam Crose tossed her eighth shutout of the season to give the Skidmore College softball team a 3-0 win and split at Greenman Field Sunday afternoon.  The Pioneers won the first game 4-3.

Skidmore is now 19-12, while Utica is 14-20.

In game one Skidmore jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning when freshman Lauren Bernstein hit an RBI single, scoring sophomore Derrin Jarvis. The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the third inning and knotted the contest up at 1-1 after Angel Donaghue ripped a triple to right center field and Kim Martin followed with an RBI single to tie the score.

Skidmore combined for two runs in the next four innings, including a solo home run by Charlotte Evans.

In the seventh,  UC used three singles, one walk and Kim Martin's game-winning two RBI double to total three runs and earn the game one victory.

Kristin Levin struck out six batters en route to the complete game win on the mound for UC. Crose struck out six and allowed seven hits in the loss.

In the second game, the Thoroughbreds used a three-run third for the win.  Senior Jamie Rubin ripped a three RBI double with the bases loaded in the third to account for all the scoring in the night cap.  Crose allowed no runs on five hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.

Skidmore will close out the season with a Liberty League doubleheaders Saturday against St. Lawrence and Sunday against RPI.
