Women's lacrosse wins big over Hartwick, 16-7

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Aided by 11 first-half goals, the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team earned a non-conference win over Hartwick College, 16-7, Thursday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. 
 
The win is the second-straight for the Thoroughbreds, who improve to 2-1. The Hawks fall to 0-4.
 
Freshman Lindsay Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) opened scoring quickly when she netted a goal 46 seconds into the game. Sophomore Kimberly Segalas (Stamford, Conn.) then gave the home squad a 2-0 lead with a goal 27:27.
 
After Hartwick lessened the lead to one on a goal by sophomore Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, Vt.), Skidmore retaliated with a 9-2 run to go into the half with an 11-3 lead, paced by three goals and an assist by Stavola.
 
A Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) notch put Skidmore up 12-3 at 27:23 in the second half before pair of back-to-back goals from Hartwick's Brittany LaVaute put the score at 12-5. The teams traded goals until the Thoroughbreds received three unanswered goals from Stavola, Abbie Hamlin, and Segalas to fasten the 16-7 win.
 
Stavola led all scorers as she finished with five goals and two assists to lead Skidmore. Madden tallied four goals and picked up four ground balls and Segalas ended with four goals. Junior Amber Kinsey (Troy, N.Y.) had a game-high seven ground balls, while sophomore Lauren McCarthy added seven draw controls and two assists. 
 
LaVaute, Bishop, and Emily Walsh (Cortland, N.Y.) each had two goals for Hartwick.
 
Senior Courtney DeStefano (Rehoboth, Mass.) and freshman Rachel Klein (Far Hills, N.J.) combined for the win in goal for the Thoroughbreds.
 
Skidmore hosts Castleton State on March 23 at 6:00 p.m.
