Canton, N.Y.-- The Skidmore Thoroughbreds used 13 three-point buckets to overcome an early deficit and defeat the St. Lawrence University women's basketball 69-59 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gym.
Skidmore improves to 8-13 overall with the win and 5-5 in the conference while the Saints suffer their second straight loss and fall to 14-6 in the season and a 7-3 record in the Liberty League. The Saints remain in second place in conference standings, while Skidmore is now in fifth place.
The Scarlet and Brown jumped out to a 10-3 lead early in the first after scoring eight unanswered points. Skidmore began using three-point shots as soon as the contest began, and they played a crucial role in earning their second lead of the frame, 20-19, with 7:53 to play. St. Lawrence tied things up at 22-22 with 4:50, but four straight three pointers in less than two minutes from the Thoroughbreds stunned the Saints and gave the visiting team a 34-24 advantage with 2:25 remaining. Skidmore tossed in another layup with 20 seconds left on the clock to earn the 36-24 halftime margin.
Skidmore was able to hold onto its lead throughout the entire second half.. The home squad was able to make it a two-possession game with 10:47 left in regulation before the Thoroughbreds took control of the perimeter once again and extended their lead to as many as 14 points before St. Lawrence closed the contest with a three themselves to end the game with the final score of 69-58 in favor of Skidmore.
Thirty-three of the visiting team's points came from their bench, including 22 in the first half alone. The Saints were unable to accomplish much from three-point land, shooting 19-percent. The Thoroughbreds were also successful at the free throw line, shooting a perfect 10-for-10 in the contest.
Leading Skidmore was
Laurel Brown, who made half of her three-point shots and scored 21 points for her squad, while
Megan Gaugler and
Kellye Caufield chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) scored 28 points, just under half of St. Lawrence's 58 total points, to pace the Saints' offense.
