Skidmore women keep playoff hope alive with 74-59 win over Hamilton

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Freshman guard Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) poured in a season-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball team to a  74-59 Liberty League win over Hamilton College Friday night at the Sports and Recreation Center. 

The win splits the season series between the two teams, as the Thoroughbreds improve to 10-14 overall and 7-6 in conference play.  Skidmore will host William Smith Saturday in its final regular season game.  The Continentals fall to 14-9 and 7-6 and will face first-place Union tomorrow.

Skidmore will advance to the Liberty League tournament with a win over William Smith and a Union win over Hamilton.

Gaugler shot a blistering 9-11 from the field, including 4-6 from three-point range, while adding three assists and three rebounds.
 
In the first half, Skidmore took a 28-18 lead off a Gaugler trey with 6:14 left in the first half before the Continentals rallied for a 12-4 run to go into the half down by two, 32-30.

With the score tied, 43-43, in the second half, Gaugler and senior Laurel Brown (South Hamilton, Mass.) ignited a 22-7 run as they each hit two-three pointers during the span to take a 65-50 lead with 6:25 left to play.

The teams traded baskets in the final minutes but the Thoroughbred defense did not allow Hamilton to come closer than 12 as they went on for the 74-59 win.  Skidmore was aided by 23 points off the bench, while shooting 52.7% (29-55) from the floor and holding a 37-32 rebound advantage. 

Senior Kellye Caufield (Monroe, Conn.) posted a double-double for Skidmore with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and was a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.  Brown finished with nine points and dished out a game-high five assists.

Hamilton senior Sydney Fasulo (Lancaster, Pa.) tallied a team high 20 points, shooting 9-15 from the field.  Junior Alex Sowinski (Hopkinton, R.I.) also scored in double-figures with 13 points in the loss.
