Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team used a strong second half surge to improve to 5-0 with Thursday night's 65-51 victory over NYU at the Sports and Recreation Center. The Violets fall to 4-2 on the season.
Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds and
Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) added 17 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Thoroughbreds.
Skidmore scored the first 11 points of the game but NYU came right back and scored the next 12 points. The teams battled back and forth before going into halftime with the Thoroughbreds leading 26-21.
The Violets would grab their first lead of the second half when Chelsea Blake hit a three at the 12:02 mark to make it 37-35. Senior
Amber Kinsey (Troy, N.Y.) would tie it at 37-37 when she intercepted a pass and took it in for the layup with 8:51 remaining to start the Skidmore run. The Thoroughbreds outscored NYU 30-14 over the final 8:51 behind a combined 23 points from Leonard and Kinsey during that stretch.
Skidmore forced the Violets into 28 turnovers and picked up 13 steals while making 17 free throws to NYU's seven.
Kinsey finished the game with 13 points while
Megan Gaugler added seven points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals for the Thoroughbreds. Grace Carmen and Jen Hum-Traverso both scored nine points for the Violets and Chrissy Kilmurray and Blake each had five points and eight rebounds.
Skidmore will return to action on Dec. 8, when they travel to Potsdam.
