Thoroughbreds down St. John Fisher to finish 2-0 in Skidmore Invitational

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on Sunday with a 58-52 victory over St. John Fisher in the final game of the Skidmore Invitational. The Cardinals fall to 1-1 on the season.
 
Tournament MVP Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) had 12 points to go along with four steals and for the Thoroughbreds. Amber Kinsey (Troy, N.Y.) and Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) each added 10 for Skidmore.
 
Skidmore led right from the beginning when Gaugler hit a 3-pointer just 44 seconds into the game and went into halftime with a 25-19 lead. The Thoroughbreds extended their lead to as many as 13 points in the second half but St. John Fisher fought their way back into the game and cut the lead to three when Kristi Jeffres found Kayleigh Comfort for an open 3-pointer with just 1:07 remaining. 
 
Skidmore stayed strong and Kinsey came up with a steal with 35 seconds remaining and hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. The Thoroughbred defense played well, forcing 26 turnovers while holding the Cardinals to just 28% shooting from the field
 
Kristen Taliento picked up a double-double for St. John Fisher, scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Jeffres and Comfort each added eight points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals.
 
Skidmore returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Sage College at 6 p.m. at the Sports & Recreation Center.
