Bears stop Thoroughbreds, 75-68

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. –  The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team held off a late Skidmore College second-half run for a 75-68 victory in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Sports and Recreation Center.

The Bears have won eight-straight games and improve to 8-1, while Skidmore falls to 3-7.

Potsdam led by 16 with 10:39 to play, 56-40, when the Thoroughbreds made a late run.  Junior guard Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y) hit two-three pointers during the span, and freshman Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) connected from long-range at 5:34 to cut the visitors lead to five, 63-58.

That was as close as Thoroughbreds would get with clutch free throw shooting by the Bears down the stretch. Potsdam hit 8-of-11 during the second stanza to take the win.

Harper led all scorers with 24 points and eight rebounds, shooting 9-15 from the field with five three-pointers for the Thoroughbreds.  Senior Kellye Caufield (Monroe, Conn.) chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

Senior Maureen Curley (Madrid, N.Y.) led four Potsdam players in double-figures with 20 points, while junior Rachel Graf tallied 13 points.  Junior Cortney Poirier finished with 12 points and classmate Molly Krauza added 10 points.

Skidmore will travel to Middlebury next on Jan. 10 to take on the Panthers at 1 pm.
