Skidmore women hold off Clarkson, 59-57

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Junior forward Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 19 seconds left in regulation to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball team to a 59-57 Liberty League victory over Clarkson University Saturday afternoon at the Sports and Recreation Center.

The Thoroughbreds pick up their first league win in the effort and improve to 4-9 on the season.  Clarkson is 0-2 in conference play and 5-8 overall.

Skidmore held a 55-46 lead with 5:41 left to play before the resilient Golden Knights went on an 11-0 run in the next 4:34 to take the lead, 57-55, with 1:07 left on the clock.

Leonard took a nice entry pass from senior Laura Michel (Middle Village, N.Y.) and put it up for two to tie the score, 55-55, and draw the foul.  Leonard calmly hit her free throw to give the Thoroughbreds a one point lead, 58-57 with 19 seconds left.

Senior Laurel Brown (South Hamilton, Mass.) hit a free-throw with 2.4 seconds on the clock to seal the 59-57 win.

Skidmore hit 15-16 from the charity stripe during the contest (93.8 %) and forced 24 Clarkson turnovers, despite being outrebounded 43-32.

Leonard finished with 13 points and eight rebounds in the win and was a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line for the Thoroughbreds.  Freshman Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) was 4-7 from three point range to record 12 points, while senior Kellye Caufield (Monroe, Conn.) contributed 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Junior Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) picked up a double-double for the Golden Knights as she led all scorers with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Sophomore Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, N.Y.) ended with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Skidmore will continue Liberty League action at William Smith on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
